Product information
The term „Economy” associated with these sharpening plates can initially cause confusion, as one might assume that the best materials were not used. However, this is not the case.
The term „Economy” refers to the manufacturing process. Originally, thick aluminum or steel plates were coated with diamonds, which made the material expensive and the handling cumbersome. The manufacturer Tsuboman in Japan has shifted to coating 1 mm thick stainless steel plates with diamonds and attaching them to a 10 mm thick, flat-milled aluminum plate using double-sided adhesive tape.
This is more economical in production, and when worn, only the thin steel plate needs to be replaced. As a result, the stone weighs only about 600 g, compared to 1 kg for solid steel, representing a significant weight saving. The flatness is remarkable even with this manufacturing method. We placed several plates with the diamond coating facing down on a certified granite measuring plate. A 0.04 mm diameter feeler gauge did not fit underneath.
We do not guarantee this level of flatness, as that would be excessive, but we can assure an exceptionally high degree of flatness.
We are pleased to offer you the diamond sharpening plates from the Japanese manufacturer Tsuboman under the Atoma brand. This manufacturer is a leader in quality and technology, which is particularly important in this area because diamond coatings are not all the same. The coating is dense, i.e., without large gaps into which narrow chisels can slip, and extremely consistent, which is by no means a given with all manufacturers. Only monocrystalline diamonds are used, which are significantly more expensive than polycrystalline ones but have a much longer lifespan. The coating is applied through electrolysis.
