Finishing Film Alox 20micron Sheet 230x280mm with self-adhesive backside

These self-adhesive sanding sheets are made from a polyester film evenly coated with aluminum oxide, which is waterproof and tough, with a thickness of 125 µm (1/8 mm). The grain bonding is flexible and holds the grit firmly on the backing. This Alox Finishing Film is excellent for sanding hand tools and metal parts up to a hardness of 60 HRC. The sheets can be cut with scissors and adhered to any suitable smooth surface such as plexiglass, glass, stone, or wood.

In addition to tools, many materials – metals, plastic, rubber, wood – can be effectively sanded with them. The application is possible with oil, water, or dry. We recommend wet use for longer durability and finer surfaces. Originally, this finishing film was developed for industrial applications where consistent grain size and uniform coating within tight tolerances are crucial, as grinding and sharpening results need to be precisely repeatable. In the craft sector, this finishing film is used not only for sharpening tools but also for flattening planing soles, for example.

Grain Recommendations, Examples:

• For sharpening hand tools, start with a grain size of 20μ or 15μ. This will remove steel quite effectively without the grooves being too large for subsequent treatments. Continue with the aluminum oxide lapping film for honing. Unlike with water stones, a few more steps in grain gradation should be planned. With a grain size of 9μ, you have a good intermediate step to eventually flatten with a grain size of 3μ. Perfectionists achieve a shiny metal surface with a grain size of 1μ.
• For flattening a plane sole, start with 100μ, which is quite coarse but very effective at removing material. To sand out the grooves, a grain size of 40μ is generally sufficient, although reworking with 20μ yields an even better surface. Application example: flattening the sole of a metal plane.
