Why drill by hand?
It is, of course, much quicker to use an electric drill if you have a lot of holes to make. Yet there are jobs where hand drilling is far superior to the mechanical type.
The restoration of antiques is an obvious area. With an electric drill you run a high risk of the sort of slippage that could ruin the surface of a precious piece of furniture. The risk is significantly less if you use a hand boring tool.
It's the weekend, and you need to get that job done urgently for your customer? If you use a hand drill you don't have any attendant noise and the neighbours can't complain!
If it is your dream to construct a classic Windsor chair, you will only develop the skills and sensitivity to achieve perfection by using a carpenter's brace and the particular bits designed for the job.
Another point: just think how nice it will be not to have the usual din when you drill. You will soon realise what a pleasure it is to drill by hand, and with a little practice you will find it quicker than you perhaps imagined.
