This plane is slightly larger than the small Veritas router plane (Order No. 307867) and has the advantage over it that you can use the blades of the standard Veritas router plane (Order No. 307860). This allows you to take advantage of the full range of blades that Veritas offers for the standard router plane (with the exception of the inlay cutter head, as it is too large and does not fit the medium router plane).
Normally, the blade is set into the plane so that the cutting edge is inside and surrounded by the plane. This way, the plane always rests on the workpiece with the largest possible surface area, even if you start planing from the side of the workpiece or come close to an edge. In this setup, the plane bridges gaps in the workpiece and can be easily guided along narrow edges. However, you can also set the blade so that the cutting edge is outside the plane. This is useful when you want to work into corners. The locking knob is equipped with a spring washer that holds the blade slightly even in the loosened state. This allows you to adjust the planing depth easily and precisely.
The included depth stop ring made of stainless steel is attached to the shaft of the blade and limits the depth setting downward. With the depth stop ring installed, you can plane up to 25 mm deep, and without the depth stop ring up to 44 mm. The plane body is made of ductile cast iron and is precisely machined and surface-ground. The plane is 89 mm wide and 76 mm deep. It weighs about 370 g. A very versatile plane, especially when working on narrow workpieces and in tight spots.
