A marking gauge is a classic scribing tool that is indispensable for accurately transferring measurements onto wood. It is used to draw parallel lines to the edge of the workpiece – a fundamental requirement for precise wood joints like tenons, grooves, or rabbets. The adjustable stop allows for the distance to the edge to be set with millimeter precision and executed with repeatable accuracy.
Depending on the design, a marking gauge is equipped with either a steel point or a cutting knife: The point is suitable for rougher work and softer wood, while the knife version enables clean, tear-free markings even in hardwood. High-quality marking gauges are robustly constructed, offer stable fixation, and feel comfortable in the hand, allowing for precise scribing without slipping.
Whether in furniture making, in the workshop, or on the construction site – a marking gauge is part of every woodworker’s basic equipment. It combines ease of use with high accuracy, making it an indispensable tool for professional results.
ECE manufactures marking gauges entirely from European beech with a very easy-to-read measuring range. However, one model also comes with the famously hard lignum vitae overlay.
The marking gauges from ULMIA are made from European beech with a hard lignum vitae overlay on the marking surface.
The marking gauges from VERITAS feature a cutting wheel instead of pins or knives, as is common with traditional marking gauges. This allows for fine and tear-free marking.
