Micro-Adjust Wheel Marking Gauge

The revised and refined new marking gauge with fine adjustment and cutter wheel from Veritas has been improved in many areas based on twenty years of manufacturing experience. The adjustment mechanism, which is integrated into the stainless steel guide rod, is intuitively operable. After making a rough adjustment of the marking gauge, you can finely adjust the position of the cutter wheel within a range of 6.35mm (1/4 inch). An internally placed fine thread allows for slow and careful adjustment, making it very easy to set the marking gauge precisely.

Locking screws prevent the marking gauge from shifting during use. The holes for the guide rod are eccentrically positioned in the aluminum fence and the brass guide plate. This increases the contact area on the workpiece—which helps to guide the marking gauge perpendicular to the workpiece—and at the same time prevents the marking gauge from rolling on the workbench.

The heart of the marking gauge remains the cutter wheel made of hardened steel. The cutter wheel solves the two main problems of conventional marking gauges with a pin. You don’t have to keep the marking gauge at the correct angle to the workpiece to prevent it from chattering, and the cutter wheel does not tend to follow the wood grain, which would make the scribe line inaccurate. The cutter wheel cuts perfectly around its entire circumference and leaves a clean scribe line, even on end grain.

The single-sided bevel of the cutter wheel pulls the fence of the marking gauge against the workpiece, making it easier to work accurately. The cutter wheel is positioned at the very end of the guide rod, which is very useful when taking measurements such as the length of tenon shoulders or the depth of mortises. You can retract the cutter wheel into a recess in the fence, storing it safely.
