Product information
Before the advent of modern vises, these forged holdfasts were indispensable in any woodworking shop. With industrialization, they gradually disappeared, even though these holdfasts allowed for much quicker work than the new vises.
We were aware of the existence of these holdfasts, as they occasionally appeared in workshops known to us. The woodworkers informed us that they had inherited these tools or had them made by the village blacksmith. When they were reintroduced a few years ago, we experienced the same thing as our current supplier, Gramercy Tools: we received an offer from the Far East. Although we knew they were cast and not forged, we thought perhaps they were stable enough for the intended use. Wishful thinking, as it turned out. Naturally, it was a disappointment, so we promptly removed these cast iron parts from our program. Now, we are very pleased to offer the truly excellent forged holdfasts from Gramercy Tools.
Beyond their stability, the best feature is that you can fix and release workpieces incredibly quickly. A tap on the top: the workpiece is secured. A tap on the side of the shaft: the workpiece is released! For many workpieces, the use of two holdfasts is recommended, as they allow for optimal securing of longer workpieces, including lateral support.
