Auger Bit Jennings Pattern
D = 3/8 inch (9.52 mm) TL 9 inch (229 mm) with square taper shank FISCH

Product information

The company Eberhard, with its brand „Fisch,” is known for its high-quality machine-operated drill bits. These auger bits with square shanks for use in a hand brace have only recently been reproduced due to the demand from woodworkers who wish to work without electricity. This trend developed in North America. Therefore, these drill bits are produced for the American market, resulting in them being available only in imperial sizes. We have nonetheless added these drill bits to our range because there are users who can work with these sizes for their purposes, and because we hold the faint hope that the manufacturer might be persuaded to produce metric sizes as well.

These drill bits exhibit high quality. They are significantly better crafted than historical drill bits. Auger bits are distinguished between „Jennings Pattern,” a spiral without a core, or „Center Pattern” with a continuous straight core. The Jennings spiral clears chips better but is also more complex to manufacture. To enable this better chip removal, the manufacturer chose the Jennings spiral.

Another advantage of these drill bits is the fine lead screw. The lead screw in auger bits has the task of pulling the bit into the wood. This saves the craftsman effort. The coarser the lead screw’s spiral, the more aggressively the bit pulls into the wood—acceptable in carpentry, but not for fine workshop work. Therefore, this auger bit is made with a fine spiral that allows for delicate work—even in hardwood. Precisely crafted cutting spurs complete the overall excellent impression.
