These drills have a curved, pronounced lead cutter that creates a clean edge even at very slow speeds, as in manual operation. The main cutting edge is designed like a chisel that rotates around the threaded tip, shaving off layer by layer of wood within the circle cut by the lead cutter. The threaded tip pulls the drill into the wood, requiring virtually no pressure. This threaded tip is finer than those on drills only suitable for manual use. This is because a power drill would pull a drill with a rough threaded tip into the wood much too quickly. Be careful, especially at the start of drilling, not to tilt the drill and to maintain the set direction. Otherwise, the tip may break, rendering the drill unusable.

These auger bits are suitable for all types of softwood and European hardwoods such as beech and oak. They are not suitable for extremely hard tropical wood. Use either a suitable hand brace or a slow-running power drill. Do not let the drill overheat and „vent” it frequently, i.e., retract the drill with the power drill running (do not pull it out) to aid chip removal and cool the drill. Work with little pressure! Not suitable for drill stands or bench drill machines!

If you frequently drill only shallow holes, these drills are the most convenient. They are indispensable where space is limited.
