Product information
We previously did not have the ideal corresponding drill bits for the Veritas tenon cutters, as we could only offer Forstner bits in inch sizes. Auger bits provide more advantages for this application than Forstner bits, as they can be operated very slowly, even by hand, and the larger cutting edge makes starting on round wood significantly easier. We are now pleased to finally offer auger bits in exact inch sizes from the reputable drill bit manufacturer Star-M from Japan. We didn’t want to experiment with cheap drill bits here either. The drill bits offered here match the quality and length of the standard drill bits in mm sizes on our metric auger bit page.
With these auger bits from STAR-M from Japan, you will achieve clean, tear-free holes whether you are working with a machine or a hand drill. Japan has a great woodworking tradition, and modern wood construction has developed industries that meet the needs of carpenters and joiners for modern and good tools. Today, we benefit from excellent quality and well-thought-out products like these auger bits.
These drill bits have a curved, pronounced cutting edge that creates a clean hole edge even at very slow speeds, such as in manual operation. The main cutter is shaped like a chisel that rotates around the threaded tip, shaving off wood layer by layer within the circle cut by the cutting edge. The threaded tip pulls the drill bit into the wood, requiring virtually no pressure. This threaded tip is more finely crafted than drill bits only suitable for manual operation. This is because a drill machine would pull a drill bit with a coarsely crafted threaded tip into the wood much too quickly. Be careful, especially at the start of drilling, to keep the drill bit from tilting and to maintain the set direction. Otherwise, the tip may break, rendering the drill bit unusable.
These auger bits are suitable for all types of softwoods and European hardwoods such as beech and oak. They are not suitable for extremely hard tropical wood. Use either a suitable hand drill or a slow-running drill machine. Do not let the drill bit overheat and „vent” it frequently, meaning pull the drill bit back with the drill machine running (do not pull it out) to assist chip removal and cool the drill bit. Work with only slight pressure! Not suitable for drill stands or bench drills!

Hex shank for drill bit No. 312350 to 312363 with different diameters. The drill bit No. 312365 (2 Inch) has a round 12 mm shank, which is slightly flattened 3 times to prevent slipping in drill machines with three-jaw chucks. The drill bit No. 312350 (1/4 Inch) has a reduced drill depth because the shank is thicker than the drill bit diameter.
