A marking gauge is a classic layout tool that is indispensable for precisely transferring measurements onto wood. It is used to draw parallel lines to the edge of the workpiece – a fundamental requirement for exact wood joints such as tenons, grooves, or rabbets. With the adjustable fence, the distance to the edge can be set with millimeter precision and executed with repeatable accuracy.
Depending on the version, a marking gauge is equipped with either a steel pin or a cutting knife: The pin is suitable for coarser work and softer wood, while the knife version allows for clean, tear-free markings even in hardwood. High-quality marking gauges are robustly constructed, offer stable fixation, and fit comfortably in the hand, allowing for precise scribing without slipping.
Whether in furniture making, in the workshop, or on the construction site – a marking gauge is part of the basic equipment of every woodworker. It combines easy handling with high accuracy, making it an indispensable tool for professional results.
ECE manufactures marking gauges entirely from hornbeam with a very easily readable measurement range. One model also comes with the famously hard lignum vitae pad.
The marking gauges from ULMIA are made from hornbeam with a hard lignum vitae pad on the scribing surface.
The marking gauges from VERITAS have a cutting wheel instead of pins or knives, as is common with traditional marking gauges. This allows for fine and tear-free marking.
