Scrapers, also known as spokeshaves, are often underestimated yet versatile tools. They are indispensable when working on curved surfaces or refining round or rectangular strips. For chair makers, it was practically the most important tool. In boat building, it is still indispensable today. Not least, bow makers appreciate the scraper for the fine shaping of forms.

In a regular plane, the optimal cutting angle of the blade is determined by the rectangular body of the plane. In a spokeshave, this cutting angle is determined freehand by the hands of the user due to the extremely short plane sole of only about 10 or 15 mm. Since this requires some practice, beginners may not immediately grasp the utility of this tool.

Adjusting the blade also requires a bit of finesse; even with spokeshaves that have fine adjustments, it can be somewhat fiddly. Since the lower-priced spokeshaves (Kunz, Stanley, Record, Anant) come with blades that may not be completely satisfactory, we recommend using the spokeshave blades from Ron Hock in any case. These fit the spokeshaves from Record, Stanley, Anant, and some from Kunz. Hock blades for the Stanley spokeshave No. 151 can only be used for the Kunz 51A and 51AR if their plane mouths are filed a bit wider and the threaded rods for the adjustment screws are replaced with longer ones—this is a minor task for a metalworker but does involve some effort for a carpenter.

A profile scraper is used for creating, refining, or restoring shaped profiles on wood surfaces. It can precisely and cleanly trim moldings, edges, or special contours.

The veneer scraper is a tool for cleaning delicate veneer surfaces and removing any remaining paper residue. It is also suitable for cleaning dirty workbench tops, removing dried glue residues, and working on unruly or heavily textured wood surfaces without tearing.
