Product information
Founded in 1825, the company Edward Preston & Sons (from Birmingham, England) produced some of the finest tools of the Victorian era. Veritas creates a faithful reproduction of the Preston model 1374 – a scraper plane with a rounded sole. This tool is both elegant and powerful. At a length of 171 mm (6-3/4 inch), this scraper plane is smaller than most models commonly used today. This, along with the tight mouth opening that minimizes tear-out, makes it an ideal tool for fine cleaning and shaping. The sole has a radius of 16 mm (5/8 inch), allowing you to work on tight (concave) curves with this plane. The slightly upward-curved handles ensure the necessary distance between your hands and the workpiece. The plane is cast by Veritas using „lost” molds (each mold is used only once and destroyed when removing the plane) from stainless steel. The polished ornaments and curved edges are faithfully reproduced.
The lapped iron made from PM-V11 steel is 35 mm (1-3/8 inch) wide and 2.4 mm (3/32 inch) thick. It has a bevel angle of 30° and is held in place with the help of a thumbscrew and a cap. The plane is manufactured in Canada. A highly recommended tool with a very good price-performance ratio.
