Although often underestimated, a veneer scraper plane is a very useful and versatile tool. As the name suggests, it is not only a tool for cleaning delicate veneer surfaces and removing any residual paper, but also for cleaning a dirty workbench top, removing dried glue residues, and, not least, for clean, tear-free processing of wild, heavily textured wood surfaces.

Intended for coarser and, with hardwood, also finer work, where flawless surfaces can be achieved with a little practice. Contrary to the designation, the blade does not scrape; material removal is achieved through the burr that still needs to be honed.

Heavy-duty design, modeled after a Stanley No. 80, featuring slightly curved handles that fit comfortably into the palms. At one end of the handle, there is a practical, large-sized opening for hanging and space-saving storage when the plane is not in use.

Strong blade, which despite its enormous thickness can be adjusted to the desired curvature using the centrally located brass thumb screw. It is securely held by a massive flat steel, in combination with two side brass screws. For better handling, the heads are knurled on the sides and also have a slot for a screwdriver.

Silk-matte black, slightly textured surface, with a surface quality typical of such cast parts, making it pleasant to grip. It almost looks elegant, incomparable to shiny paint, possibly even in a shock color!

Primarily designed for pushing, the scraper plane can also be pulled. Generally, as with other planing work, a slight twisting of the tool ensures an easier and cleaner cut. In this process, the tool is guided not with the blade aligned perpendicularly to the direction of movement, but rather at an angle. After a burr, similar to that on a scraper, has been formed on the blade, the iron is first fixed hand-tight using the two side screws. Then, ensure that the cutting edge lies flat along its entire length on the plane’s sole. Once the screws are further tightened, the arc-shaped protrusion of the blade over the plane’s sole is regulated using the central „wing nut.” It is advisable to start incrementally with a small setting and increase it as required. A smoother glide of the plane can be achieved if the sole’s surface is refined with a suitable abrasive medium to the desired finish. Going up to grit 400 does not seem excessive to us. It can be refined even further if desired, although working with the tool will leave marks again. If, instead of or in addition to the rather massive original iron, a thinner alternative is desired, the suitable and above-reproach irons from Veritas and HOCK are recommended.
