The Japanese waterstone maker NANIWA, based in Osaka, is known for making the best honing stones.

Naniwa sharpening and honing stones, in terms of hardness, lie between the Cerax and Shapton stones (more closer to the Cerax), and in use they have a very pleasant feel. One can almost sense the blade becoming sharper as one works.

The Naniwa stones in the finer grits are the best for honing. With no other stone can one achieve so fine an edge.

Waterstones do wear concave with use and require periodic re-flattening. Our flattening stones will do this job. A flat stone is indispensable for effective sharpening, especially with flat blades like chisels and plane irons.
