Natural Nagura stones

Mikawa Nagura stones
Mikawa Nagura stone

These natural Nagura stones are used to create a honing paste on the surface of natural water stones in order to refine the grit structure and improve the stone’s bite on the edge being sharpened. Very light rubbing is enough – the honing paste should not be too thick. The stones are suitable for all sharpening stones with medium to fine grit grades. They work on both synthetic and natural stones.

Mikawa Nagura Shima

Mikawa Nagura Shima

This natural Nagura stone from the prefecture Aichi is marked with a Kanji stamp of origin. It isn’t easy to determine the grit grade of natural stones, but for this stone it should be about 3000. Because all stones are cut individually, they can vary widely both in size and shape. The picture shows a cross section of possible shapes and sizes and the stone that we ship will not necessarily be one of the stones you see here. Stones are picked at random from stock to fill an order.

Tsushima Nagura stones
Tsushima Nagura stones

This dark-grey to black natural Nagura stone from an underwater mine on the island of Tsushima is used to create a honing paste on the surface of natural water stones in order to refine the grit structure and give the stone a better bite on the edge being sharpened. Very light rubbing is enough – the honing paste should not be too thick. Tsushima Nagura stones – harder than the Mikawa – can be used for all sharpening stones with medium to fine grit grades and are especially suited for harder stones. They work on both synthetic and natural stones. This Tsushima Nagura is sealed with lacquer on five sides – only the side that rubs on the stone surface is open.
