Bench planes are among the most essential hand planes in the workshop when it comes to leveling, smoothing, and adjusting larger wood surfaces. Their length ensures straight, even results as they reliably compensate for unevenness. The longer the plane, the better it can remove waves and high spots—shorter models, on the other hand, are more maneuverable and versatile.
No. 5 – Jack Plane
The No. 5 is a universal all-round plane measuring about 350 mm in length. It is equally suitable for roughing as well as finer smoothing tasks, making it often the first bench plane in a workshop.
No. 5 1/2 – Wide Jack Plane
With a bit more length and a wider blade, the No. 5 1/2 offers higher material removal capacity. Ideal for wider surfaces where efficiency and precision are equally required.
No. 6 – Fore Plane
Approximately 460 mm long, the No. 6 bridges the gap between the jack plane and the jointer plane. It is particularly suitable for roughing and leveling longer workpieces where accuracy is demanded.
No. 7 – Jointer Plane
At about 560 mm in length, the No. 7 is the classic plane for precisely leveling long edges and surfaces. Its large sole creates flat surfaces and perfect glue joints.
Low Angle Jack Plane No. 62
This design, similar in size to the No. 5, combines versatility with a low cutting angle. The No. 62 is ideal for end grain, difficult grain patterns, and wild grain. By changing the sharpening angle of the bevel, it can be used for both coarse work and fine smoothing.
With the right selection of bench planes, almost any task from roughing to final smoothing can be carried out precisely and cleanly.
