The 5-1/4 is often referred to in the English-speaking world, where it originates, as the „Junior Jack,” or „small jack plane,” as its length of 305 mm places it exactly between the No. 4 (approximately 250 mm long) and the No. 5 (approximately 350 mm long).
This Veritas 5-1/4W differs from the traditional No. 5-1/4 primarily in that the blade is 50 mm wide (as opposed to 44 mm in the traditional 5-1/4) and the sole’s forepart is 110 mm long (89 mm in the traditional 5-1/4). This longer sole forepart has the advantage of ensuring the sole lays securely and firmly on the wood before the blade engages. Therefore, one can even attribute the properties of a small jointer plane to this plane: leveling the highs and lows of a board’s surface.
The plane body is made of ductile cast iron, and the frog features a combined adjustment for blade advancement and lateral adjustment, allowing for sensitive and fine tuning. The precise fitting of the frog, together with a relatively thick blade of 3.2 mm, ensures chatter-free operation on the wood surface.
