Product information
The Veritas Low Angle Jack is an unusually versatile plane. It outperforms most others in end-grain planing, excels on the shooting board, and can also be used as a large smoothing plane. An optional iron with a steep 38° bevel is available, allowing it to be used like a standard bench plane. With this iron, it is particularly suited for difficult wood with varying grain patterns. In terms of size, it is built like a classic 62-1/2 plane: large and wide, nicely heavy, with a low center of gravity and a long, extended sole. This plane is 381 mm (15 in.) long and weighs about 2700 g (6 lb). You will come to appreciate this plane with its front section, which makes up a third of the total sole length. Before the blade touches the wood, the sole is already securely resting on the workpiece. You will notice the difference most when you return to a plane with a short front section. The iron is 57 mm (2-1/4 in.) wide and 4.8 mm (3/16 in. = 0.187 in.) thick, and the bed angle is 12°. The A2 iron is hardened to Rc60-62.
