Few planes are as universally usable as the small iron single-handed plane. Due to its handy size, it’s always with you.

For technical reasons, the iron in many single-handed planes is positioned with the bevel facing up in the plane bed. If a manufacturer specifies, for example, „plane iron angle 20°,” you should add the bevel angle of, say, 25% to it. This results in a cutting angle of 45°.

When the plane iron is installed with the bevel facing up, the cap does not function as a chip breaker; instead, it simply holds the iron in place.

Over time, metal single-handed planes have become established in the market in various sizes, with different cutting angles and bevel angle orientations. There are some models and shapes that have been known for decades in the offerings, and new designs of metal single-handed planes are also available.
