The adze, also known as a thrust axe, is used for smoothing smaller wood surfaces, such as the surfaces of tenons. With the adze, a tenon can be precisely fitted to the mortise.
We carry adzes from MHG, who produce in Thuringia and are distinguished by exceptionally good craftsmanship and quality. MHG also now offers a slightly shorter chisel with a relatively wide blade, which essentially serves the same function as an adze, but with the blade tapering towards the back.
Our Japanese adzes with a laminated steel edge are precision tools for the discerning carpenter, as they are crafted with much more precision than the sometimes somewhat coarse Western adzes. Depending on the translation, they are sometimes referred to as „Sashi Nomi” or "Sasu Nomi."
