The mortise axe, also called a butt chisel axe, is used for smoothing smaller wood surfaces, such as the areas of tenons. With the mortise axe, a tenon can be precisely fitted to the mortise hole.
We carry mortise axes from MHG, who produce in Thuringia and are known for their exceptionally good craftsmanship and usability. MHG now also offers a slightly shorter mortise chisel with a relatively wide blade, which essentially serves the same function as a mortise axe, although the blade tapers towards the back.
Our Japanese mortise axes, with a laminated steel edge, are precision tools for the discerning carpenter, as they are crafted significantly more precisely than the sometimes somewhat coarse Western mortise axes. Depending on the translation, they are sometimes referred to as „Sashi Nomi” or "Sasu Nomi."
