Product information
The mortise axe, also known as a thrust axe, is used for smoothing smaller wood surfaces, such as the surfaces of tenons. With the mortise axe, a tenon can be precisely fitted to the mortise hole.
Our Japanese mortise axes with a blade made from laminated steel are precision tools for the discerning carpenter, as they are much more precisely crafted than the sometimes rather coarse Western mortise axes. Depending on the translation, they are sometimes referred to as „Sashi Nomi” or "Sasu Nomi."
A common question is what happens to the iron when the few millimeters of smooth mirror surface between the hollow grind and the blade edge are ground away. Many are concerned that it will no longer be usable.
Answer: You will not grind away the mirror surface. The hollow grind moves further back through honing on the mirror side, so the blade edge remains completely intact. On the contrary, you must be careful not to remove too much of the hollow grind. However, you have control over this by consistently checking the tool while sharpening. Please refer to our sharpening guide for Japanese chisels.
