MHG Chisels

The chisel maker MHG in Thüringen manufactures high quality, carefully-made chisels.

MHG’s new series of short chisels have an oiled wood handle - a feature many wood workers have been waiting for from this manufacturer. These chisels are finished to a very high standard of craftsmanship. The blades are polished, and then the blade's face is ground flat again. This does two things: the blades' side edges are every so slightly rounded by the polishing process, but the chisels' faces are flat, as they must be for the finest work.

The new series is manufactured using a new forging process, which adds significantly to the toughness and elasticity of the blade, and allows for a surprisingly long-lasting edge. Through a combination of compression and heat treatment, the alloy-steel blades attain a level of performance that was up till now difficult to find outside of the highest-end hand-forged tools. The blades are hardened to 61 HRC (+/- 1) along their entire working length. Now availbale. Regular MHG Chisels

Relatively Short Chisels with Oiled Ash Handle

The blade is polished and then the face flattened a second time. The MHG chisels lie nicely in the hand, and the handles are comfortable in use for a variety of different hand sizes. They are shorter than normal chisels, but not so short as what one would normally call a butt chisel. In length, they are closer to what one normally finds in Japanese chisels. As with Japanese chisels, this intermediate length brings the hand close to the work, allowing for a very fine feel for the wood and extraordinarily precise work. We find these chisels as versatile as normal-length chisels, as long as the working depth does not exceed the blade length of 70 mm. Enlargement

The total length is only 205 mm, and the ground section of the blade is about 70 mm long. The handles are 38 mm at their thickest point. Wood is a natural product and so the color and grain of the handles can vary from each other and the photos provided here.

MHG Regular Chisels

We were so positively impressed by the quality and finish of the MHG Short Chisels that we recently added to our store, that we decided to start carrying MHG’s line of standard chisels. They are manufactured in Thuringen, Germany.

The total length of the various chisels differs according to their width. For instance, the 6 mm chisel is 245 mm long, but the 26 mm chisel is 275 mm long. The blades have only been sharpened, not polished, so as to avoid rounding the edges of the face, which should be as flat as possible for fine work. The handle is made of clear-finished hornbeam. It is slightly flattened so that even the narrower chisels will not roll away or off a bench (this can be very bad for floor, chisel, and/or foot!) and the grip feels comfortable in one's hand. Sizes are in millimeters, inch measurements are only approximations.
