Kataba - Backless Saw

The Kataba is a single sided saw without back. Its blade (approx. 0.5 mm) is thicker than that of a Dozuki saw (approx. 0.3 mm). It does not require a stabilising back and can thus be used for deep and long cuts. We recommend this saw for general purpose cutting as it is inexpensive while providing a clean and fast cut. Kataba saws are available with crosscut and ripcut teeth. For those, only requiring a single saw cutting both ways, we recommend the fine teeth ripcut saw. Click on the images for a magnified view!

Our Standard Professional Saws with Impulse Hardened Teeth

The teeth are laser-hardened, designed for wood and various other wood-based products. The saw can be easily stowed away in a tool box due to its easily removable blade. It is indispensable for workshops or on construction sites. We offer several types: saws with 250 and 265 mm blades for the cabinetmaker and saws with 300 and 330 mm long blades for the carpenter. Our saws with impulse hardened teeth come from BAKUMA and Z-SAW.

BAKUMA Kataba "Ecoprofi" mainly for Crosscut

This saw is for a professional in a workshop or on a construction site. It is designed for cross-cuts and offers excellent performance at this price level . The saw is easily disassembled by tapping it´s back on e.g. a hard log. A brilliant saw for small tool bags and the fold-out tool box. Replacement blades are also suitable for the "Z-saw" brand and the Japanese saw distributed by "Two Cherries". With impulse hardened blade!

Z-Saw Kataba for Ripcut

This professional saw for the workshop and building sites is a special saw with teeth designed for rip cuts along the grain of the wood. Tap the back of the blade against against a piece of scrap wood and the blade comes loose for storage or a blade change. Insert a new blade into the slot, tap lightly using the short angled edge with no teeth at the tip of the blade, and the blade sets itself securely into the handle.

With this saw you are ready for all the different cuts in terms of grain orientation - rip cuts, cross cuts, and any angle in between. Cut a board to length or width, saw out a tennon, it works just fine. You will notice that the saw with the blade length of 265 mm is significantly less expensive. This is because in Japan, this length is the most popular, and so the production volume is much higher, and the blades correspondingly cheaper. The saw with the 300 mm long blade is mostly used for rougher carpentry work. Tap the back of the blade against a piece of scrap wood and the blade comes loose for storage or a blade change. Z-Saw Kataba for Crosscuts in Hardwood

This special Kataba saw features a tooth geometry designed to cut hardwoods. The handle has an aluminium core. It is covered with an elastomer plastic and is very comfortable to use.

Foldable Kataba Saw for Ripcut and Crosscut

With its folding mechanism in proven Z-Saw quality, Model VIII 265 is an ideal companion on the go or on building sites. Changing the blade is the same as for all other Kataba saws: you loosen the blade for removal by tapping the back of it on a piece of wood. Then you hook in a new blade and this time tap the back of the blade holder on the piece of wood, which causes the blade to slide into the desired position. The handle is made of aluminium and rubberized so that holding the saw is comfortable even in cold weather. Length open 62 cm, length closed 33 cm.

LIFESAW Kataba Saw with Pistol Grip

Despite cutting on the pull stroke, like other Japanese saws, this saw features a "pistol" grip angled at 90° . This makes it perhaps more comfortable for those used to Western-style saws. While Japanese saws are usually wider at the tip with the blades angling back toward the grip, this saw features a constant 63 mm wide blade and so feels closer to the Western saws when used. The constant blade width also makes the saw ideal for use in this saw guide for miter and cross cuts by the same manufacturer. They are a perfect match for making exact cuts. The teeth are specially hardened for a long, useful blade life. Blade changes are simple and quick. The teeth are made for diagonal as well as cross cuts. The saw will rip reasonably well, but is far slower than a saw especially designed for rip cutting. Manufactured in Japan by Z-Saw, using the most modern technologies for hand saws.

Your Individually Assembled Saw

Assemble your own personal saw based on our selection of handles, and your preferred blades. These modern design handles feature an aluminium core, covered with soft ABS plastic for a comfortable grip. The pistol grip also has an aluminium core entirely covered with ABS. Choose any Kataba blade from our site. E.g. 250 mm, 265 mm, or 300 mm. They are all made by Z-Saw in Japan!

Note 1: All of the kataba blades on this site will fit these handles, except the Lifesaw-Blade nr. 313731, which has a different blade mount.

Note 2: Thicker blades will widen the blade mount of these handles. Initially, this is not a problem. However, wanting to insert a thinner blade at a later stage requires retightening of the mount. Here the handle should be placed on a hardwood surface and slightly tapped with a wooden mallet to reduce the slot to its original size.
