Japanese slicks
The Japanese chisel axe „Sashi Nomi” is a traditional tool used in Japanese woodworking, combining the features of an axe with those of a chisel. It was originally developed to execute precise, controlled cuts in wood—such as removing material in tight corners, loosening tenons, or shaping recesses in beams and lumber.
Characteristic of the Sashi Nomi is its slender, piercing head with a sharp edge, capable of penetrating deeply into wood without splitting it sideways. Due to its compact geometry, the tool can be guided with precision, which is particularly advantageous for traditional wood joints and craftwork in hard-to-reach areas.
Crafted from high-quality, forged steel with a traditionally honed edge and an ergonomically designed handle, the Japanese chisel axe offers both stable handling and robust performance. It complements classic chisels and gouges and is a practical alternative for many tasks where quick, targeted material removal is required.
Our Japanese chisel axes with a laminated steel edge are precision tools for the discerning carpenter, as they are crafted with significantly more precision than the somewhat rougher Western chisel axes. Depending on the translation, they are sometimes referred to as „Sashi Nomi” or "Sasu Nomi."
