The metal smoothing planes all feature an adjustable mouth. The fine adjustment of the blade is possible with a knurled screw, and a lateral lever allows for lateral blade adjustment.

The Smoothing Plane No. 4 is generally the standard smoothing plane; however, for those with smaller hands, the Smoothing Plane No. 3 is recommended. It can be used just as well for tasks typically done with a wooden-bodied double plane. However, for this, the „frog,” which is the intricately constructed plane bed of these planes, needs to be adjusted slightly backwards.
