Product information
The No. 4 smoothing plane is the most commonly used bench plane due to its versatility. Its size is just as suitable for general planing tasks as it is for the finest finishing. It has the necessary weight for smooth planing yet is light enough to prevent premature fatigue. Sole length 241 mm, weight 2.4 kg.
The frog (the part on which the blade is mounted) extends through to the sole. This provides the blade with a good support, which is very important for vibration-free work. Additionally, this design allows for mouth adjustment from wide to narrow and vice versa, without having to loosen the blade or cap iron.
The plane body and frog are made from gray cast iron with minimal internal tension, making them largely distortion-free. The blade is 3.2 mm thick and made from PM-V11 steel. With two screws in the sidewalls, you can determine the lateral (side) play that the inserted blade is allowed to have. The handle and knob are larger than usual for planes of this size, which will certainly make it easier for you to control the work process. With the knurled screw above the handle, you have a combined fine and lateral adjustment, which significantly eases blade setting.
