In contrast to Japanese saws, Western saws, like some of the dovetail saws and backsaws offered here, are generally not ready for use. They are typically set adequately, but in our opinion, not sharpened sufficiently. Even if manufacturers claim that their saws are ready for use, you should not always take this at face value and be prepared to sharpen them with a file.
Important exception: the Veritas dovetail saws and backsaws are definitely ready for use. This is because the saw blades for the Veritas dovetail saws and backsaws are manufactured in Japan, where the technology for ready-to-use handsaws is available.
