Product information
With a weight of just under 680 grams and a blade length of 406 mm, these backsaws are the largest in the Veritas range. They come in two versions: one with teeth for rip cuts at 9 tpi („tpi” means teeth per inch, tooth spacing is approximately 2.8 mm), and another with teeth for crosscuts at 12 tpi (2.1 mm tooth spacing). Both blades are made from 0.6 mm thick carbon steel. The maximum cutting depth is 101 mm, and the kerf is 0.8 mm wide due to the set of the teeth. The saw for rip cuts has a cutting angle of 104° (in the Anglo-Saxon system, angles are measured differently, here it is given as 14°), while the crosscut saw has an angle of 105° (equivalent to 15°). Additionally, the teeth of the crosscut saw are alternately beveled at 15° to ensure clean separation of the wood fibers without tearing. The saws are well-balanced. The back is a composite construction made from stainless steel powder for weight and fiberglass for increased stiffness, all held together by a polymer resin. The closed handle is shaped so that you can guide the saw well despite its size and weight. The handle piece is made of Bubinga and is secured by a stainless steel bolt and a brass nut. The blade and the holding bolt for the handle piece are firmly cast into the back, creating a very stable union of blade, back, and handle.
