With a skew chisel, you can reach corners that a regular chisel cannot. They are suitable for cleanly cutting and finishing a variety of wood joints.

Cranked paring chisels are particularly suitable for the precise reworking of rebates, tenons, and similar wood joints. They are usually guided by hand or used with a light tap of the palm.

Paring chisels originate from the Anglo-Saxon region.
Standard paring chisels are uniform in width along the entire blade length and are used for fine finishing of tenons, moldings, lap joints, in short: almost all wood joints. In general, a hammer is not used; the chisel is pushed by hand or tapped lightly with the palm. These chisels are not meant for heavy material removal but rather for finely finishing worked wood joints to ensure a better fit. The fishtail shape of some paring chisels narrows rapidly, measuring only about 5 mm wide 20 – 30 mm from the cutting edge. After that, the blade widens again up to about 15 mm towards the handle. This design makes undercuts, such as those needed for dovetail joints, easily accessible. The flat side is ground from the blade tip to the handle, allowing for very precise work on flat surfaces.
