TORMEK Grinding Wheels

Although there is much sharpening machinery on the market, little of it is for wet sharpening. Only wet sharpening machinery offers the guarantee that the steel cutting edge will not be overheated in the process and thus have its usefulness reduced. And only TORMEK of Sweden has managed to develop a fully rounded system for handtool users that will meet virtually every sharpening need. The TORMEK system operates with 2 basic models: TORMEK T-7 (older model SuperGrind 2006 still available) is intended for professional craftsmen and the demanding hobbyist. It is in a sturdy 3 mm sheet metal housing, has a carrying handle and a 200 Watt industrial motor for long running. The TORMEK SuperGrind 1206 is intended for the amateur working at home. Its motor is set not to run for more than 30 minutes per hour, and the housing is plastic. My tip would be to buy the larger model. The larger diameter is particularly good at ensuring that the concave grinding on the bevel edges of chisels and woodcarving tools does not go too far. If you cannot afford the larger machine, do your sharpening by hand! If you sharpen knives only, the small TORMEK is ok. When using your TORMEK grinding wheel, take care: to empty the water container when the machine is not in use. Otherwise, one side of the stone will absorb water and it will be out of true as it revolves. The wobble can eventually lead to damage to the bearing. Which accessories should I order with the grinding wheel? Your choice must depend on the use you want put your grinding wheel to - no general advice can be made. Square Edge Jig SE 76 Conventional jigs on the market require that you align the tool in the jig with mounting screws which is time consuming and you lose the exact repeatability at each sharpening. This new Tormek Square Edge jig solves this problem and the chisel will be ground square, i.e. at 90 degrees, each time without any adjustments. This is achieved because the jig automatically aligns the chisel to its flat, machined face. Another benefit is that the SE-76 can also clamp short and tapered tools firmly, e.g. Japanese chisels. The jig copes with blades up to 76 mm or 3 inch width. The new Square Edge Jig SE-76 has safety stops, which prevent the tool from slipping off the stone, which can hurt your fingers.
