Iwasaki floats

Iwasaki floats

As fast as a rasp, as clean as a file! That is the simplest way to describe these woodworking tools. Contrary to the rough cut and sawdust produced by conventional rasps, the Iwasaki floats actually act like tiny planes taking small shavings.

Chemically polished

This term refers to a manufacturing process whereby Iwasaki files are immersed in a special fluid heated to 140 °C. This has the effect of removing any burrs from the cutting edges, leaving them exceptionally clean and sharp. The type of fluid used is a trade secret. The sculptor’s files on this page that have undergone this process are all marked accordingly.

Iwasaki side float, extra fine, with grip

The term float refers to a class of files or rasps that are used primarily for working the bodies of wooden planes, in particular the blade bed and mouth of the plane. But because they cut so cleanly they are often preferred for many other types of work. For working on planes, the side float is the most useful type and extremely practical for reworking the bed to seat the blade. The floats we offer are some of the best produced today; they cut so cleanly that after filing there is no need for finishing the job with sandpaper. If you have been hesitating to buy a Japanese plane because of the difficulty of seating the blade, you can now do it confidently as this tool makes the work almost child's play! The floats have teeth on one side only. The rubberized grip is very ergonomic and lies easily in your hand.

Iwasaki edge float, extra fine, with grip

The term float refers to a class of files or rasps that are used primarily for working the bodies of wooden planes, in particular the blade bed and mouth of the plane. But because they cut so cleanly they are often preferred for many other types of work. The edge float is specially designed for widening the blade bed. Because the working surface is only 3 mm wide, it can be used to remove material in all but the tightest corners. The floats we offer are some of the best produced today; they cut so cleanly that after filing there is no need for finishing the job with sandpaper.
