The knife in this series (Sontoku is the name of this knife series) is made from 3-layered steel. The cutting layer consists of white paper steel and is forge-welded on both sides with softer layers.
The blade is forged and only ground in the lower area, thus retaining its characteristic forged surface towards the top. The grind itself is very well done, making the knife immediately ready for use. The blade is not stainless and should therefore be cleaned and dried as soon as possible after use. The blade thickness is indeed somewhat more substantial compared to other manufacturers, which adds more weight. The balance point shifts significantly forward, except for the Koyanagi.
The ferrule is made of plastic, which is common in this price range. The untreated wooden handle has an oval shape and can be held equally well by both left-handed and right-handed users.
