Roubo frame saw kit blade sharpened and drilled
76 x 914 mm (3 inch x 36 inch) BLACKBURN

Product information

These frame saws offer everyone interested in how wood was worked on centuries ago a well-functioning method to rip logs and cut boards. They are also suitable if you want to saw a special piece of wood that is too large for your band saw. The frame saws are inspired by and modeled after the ripping saws for veneer described by Roubo in the 18th century. The necessary components are available in three sizes, allowing you to choose the perfect size for you.

The saw blade and necessary metal fittings are available together as a kit. You only need to supply the wood for the frame. The metal fittings in the kit are available in two sizes. The smaller parts are delivered with the smallest blade. The kits with the larger blades contain the large fittings. All components are made of steel and are sized to allow you to build up and withstand the significant tension needed for such a saw to function well. The individual parts are ready for use. The only exception is the two tension sleeves. These are welded and have a seam on the inside that should be removed. This can be done in a few minutes with a coarse file.

The saw blade is available in three different sizes (details can be found in the table below). The blades are made of plain steel. They are not polished and do not have a mirror-like surface. Nevertheless, they are perfectly usable as they are. You can use them as delivered or sand them before sharpening if you want a shinier surface. As these saws are made for fast sawing, the tooth front has an inclination of 0°.

The saw blades are delivered sharpened. They are aligned, set, and sharpened to high standards so that you can use them directly. (It may be necessary to side dress the blade if the saw runs off to the side while sawing. The exact procedure for this is described in the sharpening instructions.) The teeth are set for sawing dry wood. If you mainly want to saw still wet wood, you should increase the set slightly to prevent the saw from binding. The best saw set for these saws is the old Stanley model 42 (not the similar-looking model 42X). The blade’s steel is premium 1095 spring steel, hardened and tempered to a hardness of RC 48-51. The blades are not tapered to the back. They feature a toothless area at the front end of the blade that facilitates easy and precise starting.

The kits are available in three sizes. (Details can be found in the table below.) The kits include the saw blade and all other parts except the wood you need to build the best frame saw available today. The wood for the frame is not included in the kit. Many types of wood are suitable for building the saw. For the arms, you should choose a type of wood that is very resistant to bending. Ash, hickory, cherry, maple, poplar, and many others are well-suited. The exact dimensions of the individual wooden parts can be found in the dimensioned drawings in the assembly instructions for your kit (small or large).

The kit includes:

  • A saw blade
  • Two steel tension sleeves
  • A sturdy eye bolt with nut
  • A bearing plate with two wood screws
  • Two holding pins (for securing the blade in the tension sleeves)
