Product information
These frame saws offer a well-functioning method for everyone interested in how wood was processed centuries ago to rip woods and cut boards. They are also well-suited if you want to rip a special piece of wood that is too large for your bandsaw. The frame saws are inspired by and modeled after the resawing saws described by Roubo in the 18th century for veneer saws. The necessary components are available in three sizes, allowing you to choose the perfect size for you.
The saw blade and the necessary metal fittings are available together as a kit. You only need to supply the wood for the frame. The kit’s metal fittings come in two sizes. The smaller parts are supplied with the smallest blade. The two kits with the larger blades contain the large fittings. All components are made of steel and sized so that you are able to build up and withstand the significant tension that such a saw needs to function well. The individual parts are ready for use. The only exception is the two tension sleeves. These are welded and have a weld seam on the inside that should be removed. This can be done with a coarse file in a few minutes.
The saw blade is available in three different sizes (details can be found in the table below). The blades are made of plain steel. They are not polished and do not have a mirror-bright finish. Nevertheless, they are perfectly usable as they are. You can use them as delivered, or sand them before sharpening if you want a shinier surface. Since these saws are made for fast sawing, the tooth face has an inclination of 0°.
The saw blades are delivered sharpened. They are aligned, set, and sharpened to high standards, so you can use them immediately. (It may be necessary to adjust the blade laterally if the saw veers off to the side when sawing. The exact procedure for this is described in the sharpening instructions.) The teeth are set for sawing dry wood. If you mainly want to saw still wet wood, you should increase the set a bit to prevent the saw from binding. The best saw set for these saws is the old Stanley model 42 (not the similarly looking model 42X). The blade steel is premium 1095 spring steel, hardened and tempered to a hardness of RC 48-51. The blades are not taper ground towards the back. They have a toothless area at the front end of the blade, which facilitates easy and precise starting of the cut.
