RICHTER Short Chisel 1/2" NAREX

Product information

As the name of these chisels already suggests, these tools do not have the length of the widely spread standard-length chisels, but are significantly shorter. The shorter blades are particularly noticeable here. However, because the handles are also more compact, they may not always be the first choice for users with large hands.

The advantage of the short design can come into play wherever spatial conditions are cramped and it is difficult to maneuver with the usual lengths. This can be the case, for example, with reworking in stair construction, with small drawers, or when fitting fittings. They can also provide excellent service in model making or even in sculpture.

In terms of length, these chisels are in the midfield of similar tools, offering a balanced compromise between compactness and user-friendliness. The rounded ends of the handles invite you to work from the hand on fine tasks, but they can also withstand blows from a wooden mallet.

In addition to better accessibility in tight spots, these chisels are recommended if you appreciate guiding the tool by hand close to the workpiece.

For those who find these short chisels too limited as sole chisels (e.g., no deep tenon holes possible), they recommend themselves at least as a welcome addition. Here they score not only with small workpieces but also with limited space in the toolbox or tool belt on the go.

One might argue that the shorter blades do not have as much „meat” for resharpening as the standard versions. But hand on heart: Even with professional use, such a chisel will serve a craftsman a lifetime, otherwise, it can last for generations.

When material selection, processing, design, and ultimately functionality merge into a convincing symbiosis, it becomes clear that the „RICHTER” series once again proves its absolute value for money.

On the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the company NAREX, a new generation of tools was created, named after the founder, Vaclav Richter.

Following the great international success of the RICHTER chisels in standard size, it is only consistent that the manufacturer expands the series to other product groups and sets further interesting accents.

Here too, the iron is carefully forged from chrome-vanadium steel in a traditional way and deep temperature treated („CRYO”) to achieve a hardness of 62 HRC.

The subsequent fine grinding is completed with a polish that gives the tool an appropriate surface. The side bevels extend almost entirely to the back, allowing good access to tight work areas.

The back is already well flat ground at the factory, and comparatively little effort is needed to achieve a perfectly flat back.

The bevel is ground at 25° and with this angle is more suitable for fine work and softwood. If a blunter angle is required, as with hardwood, or when the chisel is struck harder with a wooden hammer, this can be achieved by grinding a second bevel (micro-bevel) without much effort.
Here, one can approach the personal optimum in small steps. The flatter the angle, the less resistance when chiseling, the steeper the angle, the more robust the edge (less risk of chipping or folding of the edge).

Originating from Czech influence, the handle is made from ash, a wood type well-suited for this purpose due to its hardness, toughness, and beautiful grain. The handle is ergonomically shaped, finely ground, and polished. A stainless steel ferrule prevents the handle from splitting, and a leather disc at the transition between the handle and blade dampens hammer blows.
