On the SHINWA tape measures, there is a small red arrow marking every 455 mm, i.e., at 455 mm, 910 mm, 1365 mm, 1820 mm, and so on. This marking represents the distance between two roof-supporting posts or a multiple thereof—measured from the center of one post to the center of the next—in a traditional Japanese house. The 455 mm is approximately the sum of 1 shaku (303 mm = 10/33 m) and 5 sun (5 x 30.3 mm = 5/33 m). Although these units were officially abolished in Japan in 1966, they remain popular and in use, especially among craftsmen. Therefore, the Japanese manufacturer does not miss the chance to add this marking to a modern tape measure.
