Milling curves such as arches and sweeps is always a challenge and involves a lot of preparation. It becomes particularly difficult when a compass is no longer sufficient for precise marking and one has to rely on a set of more or less suitable curve rulers. Various radii are cleverly combined, drawn, roughly cut out with a jigsaw, and then with the help of various tools – ideally with a spindle sander – the desired template is created. The preparation effort is enormous and therefore hardly worthwhile for single pieces.
A significant simplification comes with the „Kurvenlinfix” from Fisch in Austria. This curve template is made of a highly elastic plastic that is tough, flexible, and absolutely unbreakable at the same time. With this curve ruler, you can quickly, precisely, and cleanly produce individual models. It is suitable for round, segment, or basket arches, as well as sweeps and light cutouts. It is simply attached with screws to the roughly cut template and then guided along the guide ring of the router. It does not matter whether you are working with a table router, a handheld router guided in a router table, or freehand.
If the screw holes on one side of the workpiece are not bothersome and it is a single production, the curve template „Kurvenlinfix” is attached directly on the workpiece. Otherwise, you will need the intermediate step of template creation, which, however, has the advantage of frequent repeatability.
The smaller the cross-section of the ruler, the smaller the radius can be chosen. The larger the cross-section of the ruler, the more even the sweep is in long and at the same time flat curves.
