Whenever exotic and particularly hard types of wood need to be drilled, the tools used must meet the toughest demands. Due to their geometry, twist drill bits are very well suited for deep drilling. When drilling into the hardest woods, extreme heat generation can quickly lead to the failure of a drill bit, especially if lower quality tools are used. Even very hard and sharp HSS tools can reach their limits under these conditions.
When drilling in hardwood, the chips usually break „short.” As a result, hardwood chips have a significantly lower volume than softwood chips. Completely different requirements are placed on the spiral geometry of hardwood drill bits compared to tools designed for softwood processing, such as auger bits with the „Lewis” spiral shape.
For precisely this hardwood processing, FAMAG has developed a new carbide-tipped wood twist drill bit. Its spirals have a very steep pitch. Two flutes without a back guide ensure minimal friction in the borehole, thereby significantly reducing the heat development on the drill bit. This spiral geometry quickly removes the hardwood chips from the tool and thus from the borehole.
Carbide is resistant to heat and is just right for exotic hardwoods. The new drill bits of Series 1593 are equipped with a brazed carbide head! A CNC machine specially built for FAMAG grinds two pre-cutters, a centering point, and two main cutters onto these professional tools. With this overall geometry, the new HM twist drill bits are perfect for processing European and exotic hardwoods, coated and uncoated chipboard, laminate, as well as hard plastics.
