The New Carbide-Tipped Wood Spiral Drills of the FAMAG Series 1593

Whenever exotic and particularly hard types of wood need to be drilled, the tools used are subjected to the toughest demands. Spiral drills are very well suited for deep drilling due to their geometry. When drilling into the hardest woods with these tools, extreme heat development can quickly lead to the end of a drill. This is especially the case when tools of lower quality are used. But even very hard and sharp HSS tools can reach their limits under these conditions.

When drilling in hardwood, chips typically break „short.” As a result, hardwood chips have a significantly lower volume than softwood chips. The spiral geometry of hardwood drills faces completely different tasks compared to tools designed for softwood processing, such as auger bits with the „Lewis” spiral form.

For precisely this hardwood processing, FAMAG has developed a new carbide-tipped wood spiral drill. Its spirals feature a very steep pitch. Two flutes without back guidance ensure minimal friction in the borehole, significantly reducing heat development on the drill. The spiral geometry quickly transports the hardwood chips out of the tool and thus out of the borehole.

Carbide is resistant to heat and is just right for exotic hardwoods. The new drills of the series 1593 are equipped with a brazed carbide head! A CNC machine built specifically for FAMAG grinds two pre-cutters, a centering tip, and two main cutters onto these professional tools. With this overall geometry, the new carbide spiral drills are perfect for machining European and exotic hardwoods, coated and uncoated chipboard, laminate, and hard plastics.
