Indexable flush trim bits are used wherever high repeat accuracy is required. This is not the case with a standard router bit because each time it is resharpened, some material is removed, causing the bits to become slightly smaller in dimension. When an indexable insert becomes dull, it is simply replaced with a new one. Indexable insert router bits are particularly worthwhile when a router is used frequently, as they save you setup time, as well as the cost and trip to the sharpening service. Especially with bits that have a guide ring, such as flush trim bits, it is important that the cutting edges are always aligned with the guide ring. This alignment is only permanently guaranteed with indexable insert bits; with a standard flush trim bit, you’ll have a misalignment – albeit minimal – after the first resharpening. Another advantage of an indexable insert router bit: hidden metal parts in the wood, such as nails, can make a standard bit unusable. With an indexable insert router bit, however, you simply replace the cutting inserts.
