Product information
For ages, the ordinary burnisher has remained largely unchanged. As a simple rod made of hardened steel held in a handle, its use largely depended on the user’s craftsmanship skills. Unfortunately, not everyone gets the hang of it, and many users have been frustrated by suboptimal results. This issue was addressed through the collaboration of Blackburn Tools and the Union Manufacturing Company. The Accu-Burr™ has been meticulously designed down to the smallest detail, presenting itself as perhaps the most versatile burnisher ever:
The heart of the Accu-Burr™ burnisher is a carbide rod with a diameter of 3/16" (4.76 mm) and three V-shaped grooves in the center of the rod. These grooves are precision ground to draw a fine, medium, or coarse (5°, 10°, or 15°) burr simultaneously on both sides of any prepared edge. As quality and precision are crucial for the function of this tool, only a top-grade carbide made in the USA by Lakeshore Carbide, a leading manufacturer of carbide tools, is considered.
Advantages of the Accu-Burr™ burnisher:
- It creates a precise and repeatable burr simultaneously on both edges of a scraper.
- Works on any shape: straight, convex, even on concave edges with more than 3/32" (2.4 mm) curve radius.
- Works on scrapers of any hardness (successfully tested on HSS with about RC 65!)
- Works on scrapers of almost any thickness, from 0.010" (0.25 mm) to 0.100" (2.54 mm) thick.
Application of the Accu-Burr™ burnisher:
To raise a burr, hold the Accu-Burr™ burnisher perpendicular to the prepared edge and center it on one of the three grooves as needed, with the deepest groove meant for the coarsest burr. Pull the tool firmly and evenly along the edge with moderate force. A drop of oil makes this process even smoother. A burr will form that is barely detectable with a finger but ultimately does what it is supposed to do. If no burr is felt, repeat the process with increasing pressure until a burr forms along the entire length of the edge. The Accu-Burr™ can also be used as a traditional burnisher by using the ungrooved part.
Even in its basic configuration (carbide rod only!), it is fully operational. Its functionality can be further enhanced with one or two handles. You can either make the handles yourself or use, for example, the 302124 handles, which can be drilled to the required diameter.
