Steel rules, also called rulers, are essential in any shop when accuracy matters. Steel rules are inherently more accurate than folding rules because they are made in one piece and so avoid the inaccuracies, however small, which are inherent in folding rules because of the to play in their hinges. The requirements for accuracy in steel rules vary greatly, however, and the range of products varies likewise.

steel rules Steel rules come in rigid and flexible versions. While their primary purpose is accurate measurement, they can also be used as guides for laying out lines, and if rigid enough, for cutting. The thinner, more flexible rules can also be used to measure rounded or cambered work.

The differences in the prices of rules result from the various production methods, which also determine accuracy and legibility. Most rules are made by cutting the required length from a roll of band spring steel, with etched graduations. Rules made by this method are adequate for most applications and reasonably priced.

Higher-priced rules are cut, not stamped, from plate steel (stamping would cause the material to warp), and the edges are ground. Graduations are machined, much deeper than etched graduations, longer-lasting, and easier to read in poor light.

We carry two product lines:

  • Steel rules made by STARRETT in the USA are made from high-quality steel to the highest standards of precision. STARRETT machine-divided rules provide uniformity of line width and depth. Graduations are generally deeper than in cheaper, photo-engraved rules and will last longer. The numbering size is distinctive and more readable than in ordinary rules. The rules are satin-chrome finished for easier reading and rust resistance.
  • Our steel rules made in Germany are made of stainless spring steel, accuracy according to EC class II, which requires accuracies of +-0.5mm per 1m; +-0.7mm per 2m; +-0.9mm per 3m; +-1.3mm per 5m. Photo-engraved (etched) markings on a satin surface provide glare-free reading.

You need only determine which rule from those shown below is most suitable for your purposes.

Ruler Stop

Ruler Stop

The Veritas ruler stop increases the usefulness of a metal ruler by providing a solid reference point. It is ideal for setting saw fences, repeat cuts, etc.

To use, slide the stop over the ruler end and tighten it at the desired position. The notched post at the tip of the brass adjustment screw allows even the thinnest rulers to be clamped securely; it will not mar the ruler edge. Repositioning is fast and easy. The stop's anodized aluminum body is contoured to fit comfortably between thumb and forefinger, with raised ridges for a better grip.

Accommodates rulers from 7/8 in. to 1-1/8 in. (22.2 mm to 28.5 mm) wide and up to 0.05 in. (1.2 mm) thick, the typical dimensions of rulers in the 12 in. to 24 in. length range. At 1 in. wide by about 2-1/4 (25.4 x 57 mm) in long (including the adjustment screw), this tool is as compact as it is useful. Please check the size of your ruler before ordering!

Veritas Straightedge made of steel

Shop accuracy begins with a benchmark straightedge as a surface reference. These Canadian-made precision steel straightedges are ground flat to within 0.001 in. (0.025 mm) over the entire length on both edges, and have been stress-relieved to remain true under temperature variation. Useful for checking whether surfaces are flat or straight, they are 1-1/2 in. (38 mm) wide and easily stand on edge unsupported, leaving both hands free for precise measurement or tool adjustment. All have hang holes, allowing storage on a nail or hook. Not stainless! More information

Precision Straight Edge from PREISSER
With Bevel Edge

Straightedges are used to check if a surface is flat and straight. This one from Preisser is made of a special, hardened, steel alloy, and tapers to a point at one end. The edge is slightly rounded off, to help keep it from getting damaged, and to prevent it from cutting or marring the surface one wants to check. The straightedge is burnished to be glare-free and to avoid reflections.

To use, the measuring edge is set on the surface to be examined. With back light, even the slightest gap or unevenness can be seen. Under favorable lighting conditions, one can detect a gap smaller than 1/100th of a millimetre.

Preisser manufacturers the straight edge to the DIN 874 GG-00 standard (German industrial standard), which works out to be 3/1000 of a millimetre. The back of the straightedge is covered with a strip of ridged plastic to provide a secure grip on the delicate instrument and to protect the hands in cold weather. The straightedge comes with a vinyl case.
