Wood threads - made with our wood thread cutters
Read what our colleague Anthony writes about the Fisch Forstner bits.
I have been using Forstner bits - mostly in softwood - for years with good results. They provide a really clean cut with a flat bottom hole. Ideal for example for drilling mortise holes.
Recently, I was given Fisch Forstner bits to test, and I must say, they are the best bits I have ever used. Over Christmas, I built a wooden horse from larch out of two robinia trunks for my children. For the legs, I had to drill four 50 mm holes and some 25 mm recesses for the bolts to hold the head, neck, and body together.
The 50 mm holes proved problematic for my other Forstner bits, with a lot of smoke and very little progress (robinia is notoriously extremely hard when dry). The Fisch bits cut effortlessly into the wood, 80 mm deep, without smoke and with very little heat generation. The chip removal was also excellent. The wave design definitely works.
Using Fisch bits in larch with high moisture content also went smoothly: a clean cut and no heat generation.
I can wholeheartedly recommend these bits as a must-have for any workshop, and the set price is an absolute bargain.
