Information about the stones from 1STONE
Similar to what we hinted at with the natural Japanese sharpening stones, we feel the same about these sharpening stones from France: Far more than (sharpening) tools, they are cultural assets! With great passion and skill, Nicolas Rollin has been dedicated to the extraction of natural sharpening stones for years. His work is deeply influenced by great respect for traditional craftsmanship, which he revives in his manufactory 1STONE. This is reflected in every step of the creation of these special stones, starting with the selection of the raw material in the quarry and ultimately culminating in a versatile sharpening stone after various intermediate steps and the demanding surface finishing.
Grain specification:
The 36 inch (915 mm) long ruler is ideal for all large machines such as circular saws and planers. It is 9.5 mm thicker than the two shorter ones and weighs over 2 1/2 kg, making it quite heavy.
Application:
This is based on comparisons with results from industrially manufactured stones. Naturally, these cannot be guaranteed; each stone may exhibit different properties, even if the stone appears relatively homogeneous.
Storage:
The stone invites experimentation: In addition to using the included rubbing stone, any Nagura can also be used to fine-tune the honing process. Gradual dilution of the grinding paste and reduction of the pressure can further promote polishing towards a mirror finish. Due to its high density, the stone only needs to be slightly moistened. Soaking is neither necessary (Splash-and-Go) nor beneficial (due to adhesion, the rubbing stone or the mirror side of the tool to be sharpened may stick). If one wants to switch from oil or glycerin back to water, thorough cleaning with a common dishwashing detergent is sufficient.
Suitability:
After use, clean thoroughly and allow to dry evenly with air circulation without direct unilateral exposure to heat sources. Temperature shocks or frost can lead to cracking, as with all other stones.
