How to use auger bits in hand-operated drilling machines?
Ideal for using drills with hex shank is a hand drill vice with a 4-jaw chuck and an adapter specifically made for this task.
However, there are more options:
In the picture, there is an old drill vice equipped with a 2-jaw chuck and a 19 mm auger drill with a hex shank. Drilling in larch was easy and without stressing the jaws.
Ideal for drilling with the drill vice would of course be a drill with a square shank, which fits into a corresponding recess at the base of the chuck. The torque load then lies at the base of the chuck and not on the somewhat more sensitive jaws.
These jaws or at least the springs can break under excessive load. Therefore, it is important to generate as little torque load as possible when using these drills. This is feasible, as the conducted tests in larch showed.
You should definitely pay attention to what type of chuck your drill vice has. A 2-jaw or 3-jaw chuck is ideal, but not a 4-jaw chuck, as this cannot hold the hex shank centrally. With a 4-jaw chuck, you need the adapters mentioned above. From left to right: 3 mm, 6 mm, 10 mm, 19 mm, 30 mm. These drills are suitable for both machine and manual operation.
