User manual: The Ultimate Sanding Aid by Gerd Fritsche

With sharpening guides, a common disadvantage is that the rollers do not utilize the entire length of the stone, and the rollers wear out relatively quickly due to the abrasive surface of the stone. In this sharpening guide, the roller is guided on the table - in front of the sharpening stone - allowing for the full length of the stone to be utilized. Another advantage of this design is that grinding sludge cannot settle in the wheel mechanism and be transferred to the next finer stone.

In contrast to other sharpening or honing aids, this one clamps the knife from below rather than from above or the side. This ensures that the bevel angle is always in relation to the mirror side and not to the top side (bevel side) of the iron. The size of the sharpening guide and the long travel path allow for the use of both hands with great pressure. This achieves a speed in hand sharpening that has not been reached before. The single wheel in the center also allows for the pressure on the side to be slightly increased alternately, resulting in a slightly convex iron.

The cutting angle adjustment is done exclusively through the height adjustment of the wheel. Settings of approximately 20° to 35° are possible, provided the stone is not thicker than 20 mm. For example, the large SunTiger roughing stone, which is about 50 mm thick, is too thick for this sharpening guide unless the stone is placed a bit lower.

Suitable for iron widths up to 66 mm, minimum length approximately 47 mm. Wheel and star grips are made of plastic, the welded frame is made of stainless steel.

Important Note: As with all other sharpening guides, ensure that both the mirror side of the iron and the stone are kept completely flat. If you do not pay attention to this, you will never achieve the desired result.

It is clearly more dangerous to drag a stone over a blade than to drag the blade over the stone. When working with the small shaping stones, remember that it is very easy to cut yourself. Not only when sharpening, but also when working with the Yarri plane, you should exercise increased caution to minimize the risk of cuts. Work concentrated and calmly!

The wheel is mounted to the grinding aid with the screw with the star grip.

The wetted sharpening stone is fixed on a waterproof base, e.g. with a stop bar and a wedge. There must be a flat area of 30 - 40 cm behind the stone where the wheel runs.

The plane iron or chisel is fixed under the support with the two star grips, the grinding angle is set with the rear star grip on the wheel and a protractor. The adjustment range is from about 20° to 30°, or up to 35° depending on the thickness of the sharpening stone. Grind using the entire length of the sharpening stone.

The sharpening stone must also be absolutely flat dressed again and again during the grinding process.
