The iron adjustment of a cast iron hand plane should always be operated with the plane iron slightly relaxed by lifting the cam lever of the plane iron cap slightly. If one attempts, as often happens to the less experienced, to turn the adjustment wheel with the plane iron tightly clamped, this small y-shaped yoke made of brass will break. This yoke can only be as strong as brass allows.
