Product information
It’s not really a marking gauge, this tool. A marking gauge is used to mark a line along which one can saw or chisel. With the Wari Kebiki, you don’t mark; you cut the wood directly. Nevertheless, the term „split marking gauge” has become established, as the user’s movement is the same, only they press so hard that the wood splits.
It was primarily used in the past for cutting the lattice strips (Kumiko) of Japanese sliding doors (Shoji). You can cut equally wide strips from a wide board. The blade is set so deep that it cuts a little more than half the board’s thickness in one pass. Then the board is turned over, and the other side is cut. After each section, you need to run a plane over the cut edge to ensure a clean edge remains for the next cut.
This split marking gauge is suitable only for softwood and relatively thin boards up to 12 mm thick. You can find more about this in the book by Toshio Odate: „Japanese Woodworking Tools”! Highly recommended, as the instructions in this book go into more detail, starting from page 34! Incidentally, a maximum board thickness of 20 mm is mentioned there, which we consider exaggerated.
