This simple clamping aid is designed to prevent the vise jaw from skewing when you clamp a workpiece at only one end of it. Simply take as many of the 2.5 mm thick shims so that the resulting stack is approximately the same thickness as your workpiece, and insert this stack into the other end of the vise jaw.
With the clamping aid alone, you can bridge a maximum of 100 mm (if you use all 40 shims). If your workpiece is thicker, simply use an additional wooden block that is thinner than the workpiece and use the clamping aid to make up the difference. This way, you keep the vise straight (parallel) when clamping and eliminate the risk of damaging the workpiece or the vise due to skewed clamping.
The shims are 140 mm (5-1/2 inches) long and made of durable high-density polyethylene. Glue and paint adhere poorly to this material, so the shims do not get dirty easily. The shims are held together by a steel rod with adjustable tension and maple end caps.
